Holiday sickness symptoms

Campylobacter bacteria
Campylobacter is the most common type of bacteria, which can cause food poisoning. It can be found in chicken and other poultry, red meat, unpasteurised milk and untreated water.

Salmonella is the second most common bacteria which can give rise to food poisoning claims in the UK. It is found in meat, poultry, eggs and unpasteurised milk.

E Coli bacteria
E Coli is generally a harmless bacteria – but certain types of E Coli can produce a poison, which can cause illness and stomach pains.

Bacillus cereus 
Bacillus cereus bacteria can be found on uncooked rice – supermarkets and other ready food suppliers go through an extensive process to ensure that this bacteria is eliminated to prevent food poisoning.

Top tips for a holiday sickness claim

In order to make a successful holiday sickness claim the following information will be helpful:

  1. Pictures or witnesses of the food / meal that you think made you ill
  2. Did anyone else in your group or people you made friends with fall ill?
  3. What was the general condition of the hotel like?
  4. Are there any Trip Advisor reviews of the hotel / the food?
  5. Was the illness reported at the time?
  6. Did you seek medical treatment whilst in the report?
  7. Are you aware of any issues being reported on social media?

Are you in a position to claim?

If you booked a package holiday your tour operator has an obligation to ensure that the food served is of a standard that won’t make you ill.

If you became ill and you booked a one of the following types of holiday, you may be able to claim compensation:

  • All Inclusive
  • Full Board
  • Half Board
  • Bed & Breakfast


If you went on an excursion which was booked as part of your package holiday and became ill as a result, you may also be in a position to make a holiday sickness claim.

Causes of holiday sickness

People can get ill whilst on holiday from some of the following causes:

  1. Uncooked/poorly cooked food
  2. Cooked food left out too long
  3. Insufficient reheating
  4. Enterotoxins not destroyed (Enterotoxins are a specific kind of exotoxins that affect the gastro-intestinal mucosa or lining. They can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and various types of food poisoning. Most enterotoxins are produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus, but other bacterial species like Escherichia, Bacillus and Clostridium also produce enterotoxins)
  5. Eating food touched by unwell person
  6. Cross-contamination
